In the following use-case, whenever a user tries to log in for the first time a new record is made within the miniOrange platform, without storing the user password. Here on, miniOrange auto-syncs a new user identity to your local custom database to take care of user tracking for further authentication. You don’t have to make any additional effort to move new user identities from the miniOrange IDP to the Database whenever a user logs in.

For all future authentication of users, miniOrange will always use the existing database/identity store and the respective identity it contains while authenticating the user.

In this use case, whenever a new user logs in for the first time, miniOrange automatically creates the user Identity in an identity source which is handled by miniOrange. But before authenticating the user, miniOrange ensures the user must be successfully authenticated against the legacy identity store (Your own Database), and only then the user profile is going to be created in the miniOrange Identity Platform. The new users are going to be created using an equivalent id and password that was provided by the user during authentication.

Custom Database connections act as a comprehensive login system so as to get user identity information from your own Database (legacy identity store) to authenticate users. It starts with a process of integrating a database with IDP which creates an interface between your IDP and Database. IDP, after connecting, lets the Database act as an Identity Source to authenticate users once a user logs in or SSO into an application or website. Despite acting as an Identity Source, the Identity platform authenticates the user using their email ID/Username and password stored during a custom database configured within the IDP. When a user tries to SSO/login into the service using their credentials, a scripted query is implemented by the configured IDP on the corresponding Database to see the entered login credentials. If a match of the login credentials is found within the database, the user is authenticated and a session is made within the IDP. Here on, users can Single Sign-On into any of the applications which are configured with their IDP.

Custom Databases are often any of your SQL Server, MySQL server on the other management system during a local environment. The sole difference here is that rather than configuring the custom database within the IDP, API endpoints are configured within the IDP. This helps the user to authenticate the user without exposing the database to IDP.

In this directory, the admin has the capability to create groups and add accounts to those groups. Group access to resources can then be assigned to them. ### Windows Active Directory vs Azure Active Directory {#windows-active-directory-vs-azure-active-directory}

Windows Active Directory, launched by Microsoft in 2000, is the predecessor to the Azure Active Directory, which has become the standard for enterprise identity management since its launch. Unlike Azure Active Directory, the Windows Active Directory uses Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) to connect with other web-based applications. It also does not manage mobile devices. - The user requests a resource from their desired application/website.
- The application/website redirects the user to miniOrange (Identity Provider) for authentication.
- The user signs in with their miniOrange credentials if no external IdP is configured. If you have an existing Identity Provider (SAML, OAuth/OpenID Connect, etc), miniOrange redirects the user to the existing Identity Provider for authentication.
- The IdP sends a Single Sign-On response to miniOrange.
- miniOrange returns a Single Sign-On response back to the client application/website and
- The application/website grants access to the user.

Now, the user can access all other applications/websites which are configured for SSO. If the user wants to access a resource from another application/website, the application/website checks whether the user has an active session with miniOrange.

- **Identity provider** - User Identity information is stored and managed by a centralized system called Identity Provider (IdP). The Identity Provider authenticates the user and provides access to the service provider. The identity provider can directly authenticate the user by validating a username and password or by validating an assertion about the user’s identity as presented by a separate identity provider.
The identity provider handles the management of user identities in order to free the service provider from this responsibility.
- **Service Provider** - A service provider provides services to the end-user. - **Identity Broker** - An identity broker acts as an intermediary that connects multiple service providers with various different identity providers. No need to understand or implement complex SSO protocols like SAML, OpenID, OAuth, CAS or any other. Instead, you can just call the HTTP endpoints and access any identities. The important reason why we should use Identity Broker is that it supports Cross Protocol i.e. configuring Service Provider following a particular protocol with an Identity Provider following some different protocol.

**CAS**
